The
land surrounding Corona del Mar was once a vast rancho that
stretched from the mountains, to the sea...
Actually, it ranged from
about Red Hill in north Orange County, to the harbor —
but not the peninsula. Still the 48,800 acre rancho encompassed
everything from Newport Bay to Laguna, and reached well north
of the Santa Ana freeway.

The History of
Corona del Mar
Centennial Edition
By
Douglas Paul Westfall
The village of Corona del Mar survived independently for 20 years before joining with the prestigious City of Newport Beach. Yet it thrives today as an independent seaside garden community with majestic bluffs, sweeping vistas, and a century of its own history. Founded in 1904.
“The
year 2004 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding
of Corona del Mar. Although it has been part of the
city of Newport Beach for the past 80 years, Corona
del Mar has always been, and remains today, a distinctive
portion of the city, set somewhat apart. For instance,
unlike other parts of the city, its address is specifically
Corona del Mar, not Newport Beach, and it has its own
zip code.”
