During the years 1769 to 1782, four Spanish Presidios were
established in what became known as Alta California. Royal
regulations specified the arms and armament of these presidios.
For the first time, author Michael R. Hardwick uses original and
translated records to describe the magnificent armaments and
artillery used at the California Presidios.

Presidios were located
at places near the coast, and were usually placed on elevated sites.
A ditch six varas (16.8 feet) wide and three varas deep (8.4) feet
was dug around them. The earth excavated was piled at the outside
rim of the ditch to serve as a parapet. The interior of the presidio
was a four-sided space two hundred or more varas (560 ft or more)
square, surrounded by adobe walls to a height of approximately 6
varas (16.8 ft).
