Kwajalein is one of the 29 atolls and 5 islands of the Republic
of the Marshall Islands. Located north of the equator and west
of the international date line, the Marshalls are a part of
Micronesia.
Literally in the stone age just 200 years ago, the Marshallese
people were brought into the space age within a few years by the strategic
importance of Kwajalein during WWII.

Kwajalein
is the largest coral atoll in the Pacific, and of the larger
atolls, has the most land surface area of any. Used for US military
purposes since American forces captured the atoll in the Battle
of Kwajalein in 1944, Kwajalein today is a key location in the
Pacific for many operations.
Kwajalein
is a commercial launch site for SpaceX -- a private rocket
launching organization. It also contains the Ronald Reagan
Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site (RTS) which includes radar
installations, optics, telemetry, and communications equipment
for ballistic missile and missile interceptor testing.
Kwajalein
also provides space operations support. The large atoll also
hosts one of three ground antennas in the world that assist in
the operation of the Global Positioning System.
