OK, it's a combat
story but it's more...

How did Japan get to the point

Where they were willing to sacrifice every
Japanese soldier

and every citizen, rather than surrender?

This was the military stance in WWII and the military
ran the government

The lead story is about a young US Marine

Who finds a Japanese diary after a battle

The back story is that
of 180 square miles & 65 cities destroyed by US bombers

Atomic
weapons did only 3% of the damage to Japan

Japanese people were warned each time yet 1,000's were killed

The two atomic bombs were dropped in early August of 1945

And finally forced Japan to surrender

It's really just the story of two young men who meet on a beach
-- and one of them is not going home.

That 20 year old US Marine, is 90 and lives in Orange, CA

Captured Japanese cannon
from WWII at Orange City Hall
