When Orange County was
broken off from Los Angeles by Civil War Veterans in 1889, a 2˝
story Victorian Queen Anne home was built in downtown Santa Ana. It
was a custom design and cost some $3,000 at the time.
The Howe-Waffle House
Two married
doctors, Alvin and Willella Howe then moved into their new home
at Bush and 7th Streets. The city of Santa Ana had become the
new county seat, which brought a level of importance to the town
started by William H. Spurgeon.
Willella
and Alvin Howe
Twenty years
before, Spurgeon had climbed a sycamore tree to view the 76 acres he
had just purchase from the Yorba Family, the owners of the vast
Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. The land rested upon the Santa Ana
River yet was named for the older village of Santa Ana Viejo, just
north of the city.

Santiago de Santa Ana
More
importantly, Willella was the first woman doctor in Santa Ana and
practiced for 38 years within the city. Known for her devotion to
her patients, she delivered some 1,000 babies. Her husband, Alvin
not only a doctor as well, was the second elected mayor of Santa Ana.

Now run by
the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society, the Willella
Howe-Waffle House Museum of Santa Ana welcomes visitors and
holds special events, several times a year. Each room of the
large home is decorated in a different theme. There are 12 rooms
in the house with different settings.
